Amit Kumar: the open-door policy creates an atmosphere that promotes success

At Collaborative Imaging, we bring you our diverse tapestry of employees and their unique stories. This month, we recognize one of our team members who have shown innovation and quick problem solving. You will learn how Amit Kumar succeeded in his career as a data scientist.

Amit Kumar was born and grew up in Dhanbad, India. His parents were modest and unassuming, teaching him the essential values in life. He studied engineering and data analytics and now lives in Luxembourg with his wife, whom he met in college and married 9 years later. He characterizes his wife as his best friend, traveling partner, and confidant. Together, they are seeing the world and enjoy conversations about anything and everything.

Amit began his career at Mindtree and worked for JP Morgan and MSCI Inc. — transitioning from software engineering to data science and analytics.

What was your journey to applying to and joining Collaborative Imaging?Amit Kumar: the open-door policy creates an atmosphere that promotes success

Life takes us to places that we didn’t know existed. That happened for me — I left JP Morgan to allow my wife to chase her dreams. During that time, I studied data science. One day I came across Dhruv Chopra, CEO of Collaborative Imaging. A chance conversation between us led to my meeting with his hiring team, and the rest is history. I’ve been with Ci for the past 3 1/2 years.

Your job requires finding solutions and thinking outside the box. What’s your secret?

My knowledge of data analytics allows me to identify problems and accept that there is a problem. Acknowledging a problem is critical to my job because it opens my mind to the obvious solutions and the “not so obvious” ways to resolve the issue, some of which might be potentially better.

I try to look at problems from the intended user’s point of view instead of imagining what I could create. This mindset keeps me focused on our client’s needs so that our solutions solve their specific needs.

I try not to allow my current skillsets to define me — I’m always open to learning something new or how to use a new tool or device, or finding someone who can.

What are your greatest strengths?

Fortunately, I am a fast learner and believe in myself. I’m not afraid to tackle solving complex problems — including exploring the road not taken. I am not troubled by healthy risk-taking nor afraid to think outside the box. Likewise, I am open to feedback and criticism. I am fortunate to have clarity of thought; i.e., once I see what needs to be done, I can find the right tool.

My wife is my greatest support and always cheers me on.

How do you keep yourself motivated and engaged when working from home?

I genuinely enjoy what I do, so my love of work drives me. I’ve learned that when I start to feel tired, I take time off — and before it adversely impacts my productivity.

Some of my work tips include:

  • Try to stay organized
  • Connect regularly with my team members and across teams
  • Track my time to be sure I’m productive and recognize when I’m not

To break the monotony of working from home, I redecorate my workspace.

The healthcare industry is known for its changing environment. How do you adapt so quickly?

I keep up with late-breaking healthcare facility trends and technology news. What happens today impacts tomorrow and is part of data analytics, and that’s my job. Ci’s leadership is consistently coaxing us to adapt to the continuous evolutions in our industry.

Is there anything else you want to tell your co-workers and our readers about you?

I love what I am doing at Collaborative Imaging, primarily because of the support I receive from everyone across all the teams. Our teams are willing to do some risk-taking and aren’t overly conscious of failing — without this, and we could not be innovative. Our leadership team has faith in us and our work. And lastly, the open-door policy creates an atmosphere that promotes success.
